The Wild Days guide

Freshwater East is a village with a lovely sandy beach situated in South East Pembrokshire. With a south east facing beach, it’s fairly well sheltered from westerly and northernly winds due to the mainland and Trewent Point.

Surrounding the beach are some small dunes, great for a bit of shelter if the wind kicks up and for the kids to play. The beach is both wide and long, with loads of room for sports. Access to the sea is really easy, with the car park being very close by with plenty of room to load and unload a kayak or paddle board.

Access to the coast path is right behind the beach. You can take a walk west up and over the cliff tops to Stackpole Quay, which has a small tea room called The BoatHouse, with the famous & beautiful Barafundle Bay being a little further. Taking a walk east will also take you over the clifftops to Manorbier Bay, a popular spot with surfers,  and bathers.

Watersports

Surfing here is only occasional, working best with a westerly wind with a southwest swell. With both a reef and beach break, when it’s going off it’s not for beginners. Obvious dangers are rip current and rocks in the reef section.

Kite surfing is popular here, simply because of the large expanse and great access. Also popular for swimming and diving.

Facilities

Whilst there hasn’t been much development on this part of the coast, Freshwater East does contain the essentials. You’ll find car parking, disabled toilets and a cafe. This is a dog friendly beach. Please note that this beach doesn’t operate a life guard service.

On the whole, this beach is a great all-rounder for the whole family. One for an easy day out.
