The Wild Days guide
Holne Moor is in the more popular South of Dartmoor. It’s a beautiful part of Dartmoor with views of surrounding hills covered in heather in the summer days.
Whilst there isn’t a lot of things to do apart from walking, on a warm summers day your senses will be full of wildlife & stunning scenery. We were meeting up with friends running a Dartmoor challenge whilst on our walk, so we took a rather odd shaped walk around the reservoir, which was stunning. We saw some amazing and pretty rare to see Amanita muscaria, the red & white dotted fungi that you associate with fairy tales. Also on the hit-list was an Adder which was heating up on the shale near the reservoir.
Recommended Walk
There are plenty of walks to do on Holne Moor. One we did gave us some views without the need to hike to the top of the moor, which is quite considerable. Walking around the reservoir is a nice east trail, with a secluded picnic bench by the water for a picnic.
